Blue Jasmine

Promotional Package : Blue Jasmine

Poster

The Use of Colours

The poster is very simplistic, the colour scheme is dominated with a lot of blue, consisting of various different shades of light blue, with streaks of red and yellow.
The empty spaces being more dominant In the poster imply a curiosity and lead to the audience asking questions. the soft blues suggests fantasy and dreams. It can also portray the main character as being a bit delusional.
The close up of the side of Cate Blanchett suggests that the whole film will be revolving around her, the fact that we can only see a side of her face suggests that she is hiding something, maybe there is pain behind the soft smile that we see in this image. The fact that her body is positioned facing towards the bridge in the distance could suggest her search to overcome a problem.
The genre of this film is comedy/drama, however, neither of those genres are portrayed via this poster, idea of the bridge and the female in the poster being troubled could imply some drama, however, that conclusion can only be drawn from looking at the poster in depth..
The poster consists of the main image, the title, the certificate, institution, main actor, certificate and billing, therefore it follows the conventional film poster rules.
however, one thing this poster lacks is a tagline. A tag line usually hints at what the film may be about, however, since we are not given one, it leads to more curiosity and ambiguity.
It can also be argued that not portraying the genre well with a tagline could mean that the audience loose interest since there isn't much for them to take away after looking at this poster, and therefore in my opinion I feel this poster isn't very successful.

Trailer

Mise - en - Scene

Mise-en-Scene is a vital concept that is used in media, Blue Jasmine has explored this concept well by implementing hidden meanings within the mise-en-scene.

Clothing and colours of clothing can suggest a lot.. for example the main character Jasmine is seen dressed in white throughout most of the trailer.

In this image Jasmine is wearing a white dress and is surrounded by rich gold colours from her house, cutlery and interior making her seem almost like a monarch, full of fame and riches, suggesting that she had it all

In this image however, we see Jasmine sitting in a plane. She is dressed in a white suit making her look important, at this moment we learn that she has lost everything however, she still has the ability to look good. This could somehow suggest that she is in denial of the disaster that has struck her and she still thinks she is above all. The bright light that is coming through the window of the plane works as a metaphor of hope to the place that she is travelling to, which I of course to her sisters place in San Francisco, in order to seek refuge.

In the trailer we also see the main character spend a lot of time in the bath or shower. From this we can see that she is deeply troubled and is using the time reflect on her life. Its almost as if she is using the water to purify herself and get away from all her memories and troubles. This also hints at the fact that she may be mentally unstable- this helps to emphasise the genre of the film as being drama.

Jasmine is also seen to be seen to consuming a lot of alcohol to help her get rid of her troubles thoughts. This can be interpreted as Jasmine foreshadowing her self destruction. She is a heavy drinker and uses alcohol as her way of reassuring herself that she is still doing okay and is physically holding onto her mental stability.
